Exploring Social Media's Influence on Global Security: Russia's Ukraine Invasion

This essay will assess and explain the relative importance of social media’s impact on global security. It will examine the case of The Russian Federation’s (hereafter Russia) invasion of Ukraine and the potential military implications of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Instagram and TikTok.

First, it will analyze both Russia and Ukraine’s use of this technology to achieve information dissemination and control, fuel misinformation and propaganda campaigns, and recruit and mobilize forces. Then, it will look at the impact of social media on international response; how it was used to raise awareness and support for Ukraine, and increase pressure on governments to intervene. Further, it will discuss the military applications of social media use in the war, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, and information operations.
