Peace and Conflict Impact Analysis (PCIA) on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada

Despite its reputation for multiculturalism, Canada has a complex and troubled history with its Indigenous peoples, particularly regarding the legacy of the residential school system. For over a century, the Canadian government put policies in place to eliminate Aboriginal governments, ignore their rights and terminate the Treaties. The goal was for Aboriginal peoples “to cease to exist as distinct legal, social, cultural, religious, and racial entities in Canada.” This was part of a greater plan to eliminate the Canadian government’s legal and financial obligations to Indigenous peoples and seize control of their territories. This cultural genocide is often described as one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history, the ramifications of which the country is still dealing with today.
